Location

The Billabong Azores Islands Pro will be held in São Miguel Island, the largest of nine islands that compose the Azores archipelago.

This event will take place in Ribeira Grande – Santa Bárbara beach.

Waves

The best surf spots in the Azores are found off the island of São Miguel, where its north coast provides powerful and uncrowded surf.

The surf generally ranges in size from 3-5 feet during summer, reaching up to 15 feet in the winter months.

Under the influence of the Gulf Stream, the climate of the Azores is temperate, with a high rainfall and a narrow temperature range: an annual temperature of 14º, with an average summer temperature of 24º, when the sea temperature is 22º.

Recommended Material

From June to October, summer season, you will just need a short or spring suit (2/2 or 3/2 wetsuit). The rest of the year a 3/2 wetsuit is recommended.

Surfboards: bring your normal “all around” quiver to the Azores.

Getting There

The best way to reach the Azores is by plane.

Car Rental

Although many of the islands are small, hiring a car is the best way to fully explore the country.

Traveling between the main towns on São Miguel can be done by bus, although taxis are a much faster option.

Due to the event and accommodation location car hire should be considered essential to move around.
